M1 - Marketing and Distribution

Marketing and Distribution
Distribution Plan:
The magazine would likely be best to be distributed online as it can reach a very large audience and due to being based in a small town, it would be difficult to find a large audience for our magazine. Using the internet to distribute our magazines would be highly beneficial as we wouldn’t have to spend money on printing and hiring staff for the print factory which would save us a lot of money. Using the internet allows us to use many methods to achieve more views such as online advertisements.
Using the internet to distribute also allows us to use social media such as Instagram and Facebook which can be used to promote the Magazine to our target audience. Social media is highly useful as it will also reach a large variety of audience and people will be more likely to see it as it should show up when they search for Football related things.
I could also put the magazine on its own website then advertise the site on other web pages through adverts such as side bars or even sponsorships. This is effective as websites are able to track the amount of visitors so I can track how many people are viewing our magazines each day to monitor any progress.

Marketing:
·         How the company makes the audience aware of the product by advertising

Methods of marketing:
Posters - Traditional, below the line marketing methods
Social Media – Interactivity with audience, can gain feedback from targeted audience, its free
Leaflets/ handouts
We could use posters to distribute in football centres or near football stadiums so that the audience is relevant to the magazines audience and will hopefully gain the interest of football fans. Online adverts to show the idea off to the audience, it will help create an audience for us and see if the Magazine is anticipated or if there is no audience.
During the release, we could use radio or TV adverts to promote our magazine to inform people of it. This can help create some hype about our magazine product before it is released to give our target audience something to look forward to.
After the first release of our magazine, we can continue to use posters and adverts to retain our customers as we hope our magazine and football fans will want to purchase more editions of our magazine multiple times.

The marketing needs to appeal to the audience demographics that we are looking to aim the Magazine toward. Therefore, the marketing needs to make sure that it appeals to the demographic.
When looking at other competitor magazines that publish football magazines, it is apparent that the majority operate on a subscription basis as well as selling them in shops. A subscription would be beneficial for us as we want to publish weekly editions of our magazine. It will also benefit the customer as it provides them with the reassurance that they will receive every weekly magazine and won’t miss out on a copy. Their subscription can easily be managed online if they chose to end it. The online subscription also allows easier marketing as the customers have to sign up first before they buy the subscription. This means we will receive the email and addresses of our customers with their consent, meaning that they can be directly targeted with marketing methods such as email newsletters or special offers through the post. This method would also be very beneficial to those with a busy lifestyle as they possibly don’t have the time to go out and purchase a magazine.

Social media

To promote my documentary, I could use social media as our target audience. Social media is now known to be used by a wide range of ages, therefore we can reach all of our targeted age groups. Another reason why I will be using social media is because it’s free, meaning we would have nothing to lose if the promotion wasn’t as effective as expected. Accounts can be created for free on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram before the release of the magazine to gain some public interest before we release the magazine and no one knows what the magazine even is.
Facebook could be used as its average age of users is 18-34 years old (source- http://smallbusiness.chron.com/breakdown-facebook-users-age-63280.html)
This is a large percentage of our target audience as many younger people in the UK play Football so we could find a large amount of potential customers on this website.
On Twitter and Instagram, hashtags can be used for slogans as they allow you to search the hashtag and it shows all tweets containing the hashtag. Therefore, I can use a hashtag in the advertising campaign so I can see what people have to say about the magazine just by searching the hashtag.

M1 – Distribution methods

Marketing methods:

The Gantt chart shows the time period for how long the magazines marketing methods will take. These methods include online advertisements, posters/billboards and adverts in other print publications. The magazine will be promoted heavily before the football season starts as shown on the chart I have created. Up until October the magazine will be promoted in multiple places.

Distribution methods:
The Gantt chart for distribution methods shows the methods for distribution include online including online subscription options and local shops. The time period for online distribution will be once the season has started from September onwards as we want to release our magazine as soon as the football season starts so it is relevant to current football news. Therefore the magazine will be more in demand as all football fans will be excited for the new season to start.

P2 - Magazine layout

Here is a template that I made for the front cover of my magazine. I did this using the research that I gathered from my sources and from researching other football magazines. When creating this template I considered the images and text to be included on the front cover in order to appeal to my target audience. I ensured that I didn’t include too many images or text on the front cover so that it wasn’t all crammed together and I made sure nothing was overlapping each other.

P1 - Football research

P1

Secondary Football research:
Football is the most popular sport in the world as it is the most played and most watched sport on Earth. Arguably the most successful and most popular league in the world is the Premier League. The Premier League is an English professional league for men's association football clubs. It is the country's primary football competition which is contested by 20 clubs throughout England and Wales.
Each Premier League season runs from August to May. The 20 teams all play 38 matches each which includes 2 matches against the same team (one home game and one away game). This totals 380 games throughout a whole season in the Premier League. The premier league has a table which teams are ranked on the amount of points they earn through the season (0 for a loss, 1 for a draw and 3 for a win). It operates through a system of promotion and relegation. The 3 lowest teams are relegated to the lower division (The Championship) and the top 3 teams from that league get promoted to the Premier League.
Most games are played on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, however some games can be played on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday or rarely on a Friday night. There is a variety of kick off times for these days. They are usually shown between 12:30pm on Saturdays to 8pm on Mondays. This enables fans in all continents to watch the games at convenient times. Premier League matches can include matches between teams who are challenging for the title, derby matches, title deciders, relegation deciders and matches that determine who will qualify for the Champions League.
The Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the world. It is broadcasted in 225 territories to 730 million homes with a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people. The Average audiences per match has remained largely constant while the number of games broadcast has increased, indicating that total viewing of Premier League games over the course of a season has also increased.

Research Question answers: As part of the programme of consumer research conducted by independent market research agencies.
·         Half of Premier League fans say they support one of the “big six” clubs (Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City).
·         A quarter of the UK population say they are fans of the Premier League – with interest higher amongst men particularly 25-34 year olds.
·         Most Premier League fans say they watch, on average, one Premier League match per week live on television.
·         Slightly more than six in ten Premier League fans that subscribe to Sky Sports say that Premier League football was a reason that they subscribed to Sky Sports.

p1 - Proposal

P1 - Proposal Unit 3 Magazine

Format: Magazine

I am going to produce a new Football magazine about modern day unprofessional football in the form of a Front Cover and DPS (Double Page Spread)
Purpose:   This magazine will be aim to inform and educate and entertain because I plan to include informative articles and football match reviews. Modern day football is a widely talked about subject amongst football fans, therefore this magazine will provide information and some entertainment all about it.
Genre:  This magazine’s genre will be sports. I plan to produce this magazine based on football and several football elements such as locations of the football games and the professional levels of games.

Content:
My magazine will include pictures, information, analysis, interviews and match reviews. The magazine’s body copy will include some information about the English Premier League, as this will make the magazine more popular due to the popularity of the league. I will also include some analysis and details of 5-a-side football including a debate on how the Football Association are dealing with upcoming talents. In an article, I will intend to persuade readers to participate in 5-a-side football by including a match analysis of an important 5-a-side league game at my local football centre.
Style or Approach:
The house style will include bold and vibrant colours and fonts as they have a greater impact when inserted onto a dark background. I plan to use the colour pink throughout the magazine as it is a colour of the official Premier League’s colour scheme and it is a bright colour, which stands out very clearly. To create these pages, I am going to use Adobe Photoshop to construct the magazines front cover and double page spread as it is a reliable go-to software for designing things such as magazine covers. Photoshop has tools that will be beneficial in constructing the magazine cover as it has the ability to cut out the background of images of Footballers so the image is just the player itself.
Audience:

  • Any aged Football fans but mainly aimed for younger adults and teens (14-30) in general. The aimed gender of this magazine is Mostly for males but there are still Female fans so it will be suitable for both genders. The targeted gender will be Male though because football is a big part of most males lives as it is a very popular sport for males to play or watch

Length:
The magazine will be size A4 as this size is not too big so it is handy to carry around. It will contain 4 pages including the front and back cover
Frequency:
There will be weekly editions and a monthly edition at the end of each month. The weekly editions there will be analysis of the past weekend’s games in the Premier League whereas the monthly edition will contain a review of the months Premier League games and all competitions such as player of the month and goal of the month from all the football games that took place that month. Each weeks magazine will cost £1.99 whereas the monthly editions will cost £3.99

Possible photo ideas for the magazine:

Large long scenic shot:
For this shot, I plan to use a wide angled lens by using a tripod to create a clear landscape photo of a football pitch with players playing on it. A possible location for this would be my local football centre, which has 5/7 aside games daily. This would also have a large appeal to the Liverpool based audience, as this location is local to the target audience. It will also appeal to those who play 5/7 aside football but are not local.
Long exposure shot – An image of a footballer stepping up for a penalty, silhouetted by light with a background of darkness would be effective, as the dark background would help highlight the penalty taker. This also means the text around the image would stand out if I used light colours.
