D1 - Evaluation

For this task I have planned, developed and produced a football based magazine. As part of this magazine I have created three pages including a front cover as well as a double page spread to appeal to a football fan audience.
Front Cover – For the cover page I have used a bold ‘Arial’ font which is presented in a graphic format so that it stands out clearly as the title. The title includes some alliteration so that the name is catchier to hopefully increase the chances of the audience remembering the name of it and to recognise it. The main masthead will say ‘The Football Feed’ as this name relates to the genre aspect of the magazine as it directly refers to the sport and therefore the context of the magazine. This suddenly informs the audience that the magazine is football related and will instantly grab the attention of football fans who see the magazine.
The clear ‘Arial’ font is also very clear on the page which allows the audience to easily read and interoperate the text. I have used some cover lines such as ‘The Prem’s best – Premier League season review’, ‘Stat Attack’ and ‘The rise of 5-a-side’ so that the audience will see the contents of the magazine from briefly viewing the front cover. These should interest the audience and hopefully sell the magazine to them if they want to read more. Throughout my magazine, I have used bold and vibrant colours in the house style as I feel like they have a better impact on the page as they significantly contrast the background and stand out clearly. I have mainly used the colour red for the headlines and cover lines as this colour is frequently associated with football as a lot of football teams play in a red kit.
On the front page I have included an image of a football on grass as this is a relevant image and also works as a clear background to add text over it.  The main image is a close-up image of a football on a football pitch as this is a simple but effective image to use for a sports themed magazine. This has changed from my original plans as I believe this would be a simpler image to have on a front cover. The first image I planned to use didn’t allow the text around to stand out as much as the ball image I have chosen

M2 – Legal and Ethical issues

Legal
Permission will be needed from those whose face appears in the magazine so I can use their images freely throughout each magazine edition. For their permission they will have to sign a consent form. This allows the image to be used freely from the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act within the production of my magazine and to be published to the public when completed. I will also need to gain permission from the football centre to be able to take pictures in their centre. Within the magazine, most design work will be created by myself therefore will not governed by copyright laws.
When creating my content, I must ensure I follow the Obscene Publications Act as the magazines are predominantly targeted at younger ages, so the content must not have a negative influence on this audience. For example, the magazines shouldn’t include any offensive or inappropriate language.
On both adverts I must follow the Libel Law, so I don’t publish false information about any footballers, the football centre or any football related figures in general. Furthermore, I will need to avoid being biased towards the football centre even though I am aiming to persuade teens to play football more often. This is because it may just seem made up and exaggerated to the audience. To avoid this law, I intend not to publish any untrue or exaggerated information, so I will use reliable information provided by my secondary research sources.
For the print magazine, we will have to ensure that the poster meets the standards set by the ASA so that it would be fit to be distributed to the public. Therefore, I made sure that there was nothing inappropriate or misleading within them.

Ethical
A very important factor during the creation of magazines is representation. I will try to include both genders and multiple races in the magazine to suggest that football is a sport for all genders and races.

Consent Forms for Media campaign production

Name:………………………………………………………………..

I give my consent:
·         For myself to be pictured for inclusion in a football magazine
I am aware that this magazine production by Andrew Hammond will be uploaded online and distributed nationwide to magazine subscription members and I allow for my name to be included in the pre-production documents for the Digital Media coursework.

Signed: ………………………………………………………………………….

It is important to create a consent form as I cant use any images of anyone without their permission as i could get in trouble with the law if they made a complaint about their inclusion of the image.

I made a call sheet so that I know exactly what I need to do and where I need to be in order to take the images for the magazine.  This is to try and reduce the risk of me forgetting something such as the time or date.

I saved and exported magazine pages as a JPEG file to make it into an image to make it easily to upload it to my online blog. The main image of the football on the front page is a strength as it is of a high quality due to the very good quality of camera on my smartphone. Similarly, when editing the images, the files were saved as PSD's (Photoshop Documents). These are lossless file formats that allow for graphics to be created and edited in multiple layers. This file format is high quality as the Photoshop software is very professional and commonly used throughout the magazine industry and by graphic designers.
The double page spread was exported as an Adobe PDF. This file format was chosen because of its high quality and lossless format. The PDF file is also beneficial when printing off the magazine which is also an industry standard for publication. The PDF allows for the magazine to be distributed via an online website. I used InDesign to create the double page spread as it allows users to easily create and move around graphics alongside text boxes. I then saved the double page spread as an InDesign document which allowed me to edit the components in a high quality.

P3 - Swot analysis

SWOT analysis
Photo shooting at a football centre
Strengths
Weaknesses
·         This where football matches take place every day
·         It is local so it is easily accessible for me

·         We will have to make sure no one else is in the shot who shouldn’t be as permission would be required. If they were included without authorisation, then legal issues could occur
·         We would have to request permission and pay for entry. The centre might even deny our request
Opportunities
Threats
·         We won’t need any props other than the camera which we will bring and also a football which will already be there.
·         It would make it easy to interview a player to get some quotes for my articles in the magazine

·         There is a risk that our tripod and camera could get hit by a football
·         Some people may feel uncomfortable with us taking pictures of the football pitches in case they are included in the photo.
